VII

The Roman numeric system is based on shapes of the human hand.
One finger is one line, up to three, then it works backwards, so that four is one less than 5: IV.
Five is represented with a V because of the shape the hand makes when you hold all fingers up.
All shapes of Roman numerals can be made using the hands.

You obviously know by now that VII is 7 in Roman numerals, but I thought I would show you the rest of the numbers:

Roman numerals use seven symbols:
I = 1
V = 5,
X = 10,
L = 50
C = 100
D = 500
M = 1,000
Other numbers are a combination of these:
II = 2,
III = 3
IV or IIII = 4,
VI = 6,
VII = 7,
VIII = 8
IX = 9
XI = 11
XII = 12
XX = 20
and so on

For large numbers (five thousand and above), a bar is placed above a base numeral to indicate multiplication by 1000:
_
V = 5,000
_
X = 10,000

For very large numbers (five million and above), there is no standard format, although sometimes a double bar or underline is used to indicate multiplication by 1,000,000.That means an underlined I is one million (I cannot do underline in this!)

I hope this crash course helps you understand Roman numerals!

VII. Incidentally, the V represents an upheld hand with 5 fingers. The I represents a single finger held up, and in case you need to know X=10= two hands, one of them inverted on top of the other. C=100=century and L=50 ,which graphically roughly equals a bisected C.

VII

V= 5
I= 1

if it is after the largest character it is add to. If it was before the largest character it is subtract from.

ex: X=10

therefore

IIX would be 8 and XII would be 12.
