I think that it is because we are so busy chasing the "American Dream", keeping up with the Jones' and trying to have the most money, that we forget to enjoy the simple things in life. We are so future focused, often on things that we may never even have, that we forget that every day has blessings, happiness, and moments of joy. People in other countries are probably not as obsessed and therefore can focus more on living in the moment.
I, for one am very happy 90% of the time becuase I live for the moment, and know that any plans I do have for the future are apt to be changed.

No surprise really.

The vast majority of Americans have never lived anywhere else. They have no basis for comparison but one....what they see on TV.

Have you noticed the popularity of the 'lives of the rich and famous' genre? It permeates everthing from network television through MTV and even FoodTV! Not only does this foster materialism, but it further sets an unreasonably high level of expectations in the minds of these untraveled people.

Now, given that most Americans are reasonable comfortable in their environments, this gives them plenty of time to contemplate how their lives do not stack up well to the lives they see on the tube. Why wouldn't they be unhappy?

An interesting comparison would be to compare the happiness levels of both legal and illegal immigrant groups in contrast to the natives.

I don't like having to spend billions of dollars of our hard-earned tax dollars on other countries, only to have them spit back in our collective faces.

I don't like reading about hatred of Americans and America in the news.

Freedom comes at a cost, in many ways, too bad this also includes the loss of American lives fighting to help others be free.

Because our lives are to complicated with the stress of everything around us.....I got to go here....I have to do this....I can't forget this.....and on and on till we drive ourselves crazy! Not nearly enough time in the day for everything! We are multi-tasking our multi-tasks! We all SHOULD just stop and smell the roses! A cliche I know but it really seems to fit perfectly! Do you ever feel like the proverbial puppy chasing his tail?

Rockstar, if it was fuel prices we in Australia would be even lower. we pay about US$4 /gallon and it's even highr in Europe.

We don't even import oils and our prices are high because we are being gouged by a scumbag conservative government that is trying to grind the working class into the ground

We are geneally told to follow the American dream. Yet, few ever find it. So most Americans are (in their own eyes) failures.
