Most fish will eat as much as you give them. This causes no end of problems. Bloating, digestive tract blockage... Plus the more food you put into a tank, eaten or uneaten, the more ammonia builds up in your tank. (Ammonia is toxic.) You should feed a fish once a day no more than they can eat in 3-4 minutes, or twice a day no more than they can eat in 1-2 minutes.

i'm kind of... ya know... baffled, i guess, that some people actually said no to this question.
yes, a goldfish will eat until it dies. their minds are simple and when they see found they just know to eat it. their stomachs can only stretch to be so big. a goldfish will not get fat, it will die. feed it once or twice a day and only put enough flakes in the water for the fish to eat for NO MORE than 3 minutes.

It is virtually impossible to over-feed a fish, but you can over-feed a tank and that's not a good thing. Your fish will only eat what it needs, then leave the rest to rot at the bottom of your tank. The best way to avoid this from happening is allow them 10 minutes to eat then scoop out what's left of the food with your net.

Goldfish will eat until they are full unless they don't want to then they will only eat what they want until they don't want to eat anymore.
Then they will ignore you, get fat and develop digestive issues. Unless they get "worried about", the gold fish will be alright.
food and things of that nature disturb the water. too many pollutants will make said goldfish swim upside down which confuses the fish and may cause death.

They'll keep trying to eat, but every time they open their mouths to grab another piece of food they'll spit out what was in there. It's like watching a hot dog eating contest gone bad. :) You'll figure out how much to feed them before too long. They can get overweight, but that typically comes from feeding them too often, or the wrong types of food, rather than too much at any one feeding.

A goldfish will only eat until it's full. It may put on weight, but I think they're smart enough to know when to stop. I feed mine at least twice a day, and plenty. And they're striving.

there is no truth in putting some more weight. its funny. if you feed more, definitley it will cause some problems. we are intented to feed some chemically made food. not the natures best natural food items. so there is a limited quantity of food which can give all the nutritions to the goldfish. if you feed more there may be some possibilities to put your pet in danger,

Yes, goldfish will literally eat themselves to death. They are cold-water fish that hibernate in the wild, so they always think Winter is just around the corner, and eat accordingly, fattening up for their "hibernation". In an aquarium setting, it never really gets below house temperature, so they'll eat and eat, thinking colder weather is on its way. If fed all the time, eventually they'll get "swim bladder" and die.A fishes swim bladder keeps them floating upright in the water, but if they eat too much, their intestines will push against their swim bladder, and eventually kill them.
