I'm going to Alaska next month and I heard there's a lot of mosquitos there. Is that true? How bad is it?

I said in the summer. No it is not too cold for mosquitos to be in Alaska. Alaska is not the North Pole! I'm asking because my mom knows people who have been there and they said it was bad but when I went to the weathere channel website, it said the mosquito activity is moderate. I'm confused...which is it...severe or moderate? What do they define "moderate" as compared to California?

By the way, it's not extremely cold there in the summer. It only gets to about 60 degrees.

Yes, we have mosquitos. Rather a lot of them at times in some places.
Wet areas with bushes and no wind are worse. There are places in the Alaskan interior and north slope where an exposed arm would soon have a 100 squitters on it.
But I live and play here (on the Kenai Peninsula south of Anchorage) and I put on repellent maybe 3 times year. If I fishing on a stream when there's no wind, I'll use some. But if I'm hiking or there's a wind, it's not bad, you swat a few each hour as they land on you.
At my house in the woods, there are always some around come May. But in the burbs or in the city, it is not an issue. Lawns and buildings and pavement don't allow mosquitos to breed.
Once we get some freezing nights (early October), the mosquitos get knocked down a lot. Once the snow flies, they're gone till May.
You can buy mosquito repellent at any market here. If you are going to fish a river or lounge around in the bush, consider a mosquito head-net (about $10).

I have been to Alaska twice between the months of April and November and I can tell you that there are many LARGE mosquitos up there. Summer starts in June and the weather is around 80-90 degrees then. However, the cold weather starts in mid-September and the mosquitos are gone by then. This is in Fairbanks, Alaska. Of course, there are also a lot of wildfires up there and this can affect the amount of mosquitos you will see.

it depends on the time of year, im not sure when, for example, there is a time of year when the mosquito's are really bad, when the sun goes behind the clouds all you can see are mosquito's, but when the sun comes out they are gone. the mosquito's will actually cause the caribou to migrate.

i'd use a similar repellent inspite of the position i became travelling. I stay in British Columbia and use Off! each and every time i flow camping out and function been happy with it. i recognize that many human beings swear by an Avon product observed as pores and skin-so-smooth.
