If there are two snakes and a winged staff it is called a Caduceus. It represents Hermes the greek god who escorted the dead. It becomes associated with medicine from the belief in astrological healing. In ancient Greece this symbol represented commerce.
If it is a single snake with a plain staff it is called the Rod of Asclepius. This was associated in ancient Greece with medicine. Asclepius was Apollo's son and the god of medicine.
