If you take a look at the financial statements of Google and others, they earn billions of dollars. In addition, their annual report says that most of their money is from ads. When you load up the pages, there are tons of ad on almost every page. Each click generates a bit of revenue for them.

For one thing, they show us lots of ads, if not here than elsewhere on the site. The companies pay for the privilege. If we're looking at this, we're not looking at TV and commercials, so they're happy to pay for ads someplace. You'll notice also that they've had some "big names" like Al Gore and Bono come in to promote stuff here. If we've got reasons to stay on the site, they can use it to promote themselves to advertisers. It works, too--I've had days when *all* I've done to entertain myself online was at Yahoo!

Ads,ads, ads. Companies pay top dollar to advertise in strategic locations.

On Yahoo's home page, one business card sized ad can run into the seven figures per month
