I am in a write's group where I live and there are several people who are self publishing and doing very well with it. Go do a google search for self publishing and you will learn all you need to know. Good luck, hope to be reading your book one of these days.

First, write a complete book (i.e. beginning, middle and end). Second, rewrite it if it isn't your best work. Third, make sure you've copy edited it (i.e., fixed any grammar, spelling and punctuation errors). Fourth, Look up manuscript format on the web and make sure you have put your book into that format. Fifth, look up how to write a synopsis as you will need this. Sixth, either check the Writer's Market or even online market information (depending on what kind of book you are writing) and see which houses are open to your sending the manuscript to them for submission.
Seventh, make sure you follow submission guidelines exactly as stated. Eighth, send out your manuscript to a publisher with an SASE (self-addressed, stamped envelope). Ninth, start writing the next book. Once the book is out there (i.e. published and on the shelves) people may contact you about obtaining film rights to it.

If you are looking to have the story go directly to film, look up how to write a film script.

Good Luck with your writing career.

Have you finished writing your book? I’d suggest getting a literary agent (get a good one someone with a positive track record)

For one, agents can get you a better deal than just going straight to a publisher.

Two, most of the bigger publishing houses only deal with writers represented by agents

Three, literary agents do the paper work, figure out contracts, etc

Four, a good literary agent will edit your work so that it is the best it can be before selling it to a publisher, they usually have insiders view on which editors which best like your writing voice, style, etc.

***And of course, if yours is a great book (ie, highly marketable) a literary agent can help conduct an auction, this is where publishers bid to publish your books and can mean $$$$$$$!

With that, how about looking for agents and who represents what:

http://www.anotherealm.com/prededitors/pubagent.htm

For a list of agents, you can also try this:

http://shalladeguzman.com/ShallaAgentList.php

(this has links to AAR, Agent Query, etc)

Finally, you can check out Publishers Marketplace:

http://www.publishersmarketplace.com/

But before you query an agent (don’t send the whole manuscript, they only want a query letter first, where you tell them what your book is about in a 5-10 sentences) I suggest getting your manuscript critiqued.

If you’re starting, join a writers group. There’s a list of them here:

http://shallabizness.blogspot.com/2006/02/join-writers-associations-and.html

or use yahoo search. Find a critique group there.

There’s a recent interview/Q&A with an HBO Producer here:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ShalladeGuzman/

Q&A with Producer and former HBO Dev Consultant Taylor Van Arsdale Messages #’s 1024-1054

She answered questions about how to sell a book to movie producers.

Also, in the File section of that group, you will find published authors' Query Letters, so if you like to find out how query letters look like.

Oh, and there's an inexpensive class (only $25) on how to write query letters/synopsis here:

http://www.writeruniv.com/

If you just want to e-publish your book, that’s a lot easier and you won’t have to look for an agent because it won’t pay much at all (from a couple of hundred bucks or maybe even free, actually, e-books, you may end up paying to have your book published).

Finally, get a website like I did:

http://shalladeguzman.com/

I’ve been meeting a lot of literary agents, editors and publishers that way.

Good luck!

First send it to a critic, and fix stuff. If you haven't been published, you may have a big job ahead of you. Buy a 2006 Writers Market book. Market you book to places that are interested in the subject you wrote about. Once you have papered a wall with rejection notices, you'll find a publisher. Send manuscrips or a review of your book to places you find in writers market books to find out who would want it in the first place.
