Besdies being illegal, check the newsgroups for the cracks and phrozen crew listings. You can learn much from them. There are a few books on how to do hacking, but you need to know Unix, C, and how servers work.
There are many tools you can find on the net, but if you get caught hacking some important computer, like a bank of the gov and those tools are on your computer, you may get some jail time. So be warned.

why would you want to hack. is it for money, because if it is, go out and get a real job. hacking is immoral, people have a right to their privacy. go find yourself a hobby.

First you need to have a good idea on networing, then good idea on latest programming language (not all, some may be sufficent). Then you need to study books of basic haking. then go head....
