Its about the barriers that people use to insulate themselves from hurtful relationships, bad life experiences and so forth. The main character "Pink" is a rock star with a huge drug problem (shocking, I know), a failed marriage, a dead Father, an overbearing Mother, and lots and lots of emotional baggage.
The "wall" itself is actually metaphorical, its just a representation of how isolated some people can get when life hands them hardships and sorrow.
The likely model for "Pink" is the original front man for Pink Floyd, Syd Barret... he passed away a couple of days ago after a long struggle with mental illness and diabetes. He will be missed.

I used to try to figure that one out myself; one thing you have to consider is that this song was written in the '70's during an era when "psychodelic" drugs were common. It was not until the 80's that that any music videos were made and they had to try to interpret that song into a video. I can see where someone watching the video would think it is about Hitler; however, the original meaning was more of anti-disestablishment, not conforming to "THE MAN'S" standard and that individual should be allowed to think for themselves and not just except that they are "Another Brick In The Wall".

Pink Floyd The Wall is a 1982 MGM film by British director Alan Parker based on the 1979 Pink Floyd album The Wall. The screenplay was written by Pink Floyd vocalist and bassist Roger Waters. Though Waters initially considered himself for the title role, the film ultimately starred Bob Geldof, whose character Pink was loosely based on the biographies of both Waters and Pink Floyd vocalist and guitarist Syd Barrett, both of whom were founding members of the band. ...

And other things that one Pink Floyd guy didn't like which was people having trouble getting along. I bet it's at the library and it's free to watch, but then again maybe it's not, it is at mine.

The Wall is an homeage to one of the founding Pink Floyd members, who purportedly fell to a deep nervous breakdown.
It's about one's desent into madness......and his power to arise back from it; to shine through.

I think it's about how society stops you from being yourself and doing what you want. It all adds up to a wall you can't penetrate.
