There are a variety of differences between the RX-7 and the RX-8. To begin there are 3 generations of RX-7 models which span the years 1979-2002. In a nutshell all RX series automobiles(rx-2, rx-3,rx-7, r-100, as well as the cosmo) feature a wankel inspired rotary engine which utilized either a dual or triple rotor configuration. The biggest difference between the various Rx-7 models and the current RX-8 is that the rx-7 is a 2 seat, 2 door FR sports car whereas the RX-8 is a 4 door 4 seat sports car.

Omg those guys know nothing about Mazda. The RX7 is a two seater car with a front engine rear wheel drive layout. The engine is a 1.3 liter wankel rotary engine with two sequential turbocharger, that means the engine uses one turbo until it revs up to 4000rpm or more and then the other turbo cuts in. It is an extremely well balanced car, having a weight distribution of 50/50. It is well know for its lack of reliability since the engine works with two rotors, which have to move in a circular motion thus need apex seal which wear out pretty fast. The RX8 uses a Renesis engine which is naturally aspirated and still has two rotor housing, producing less horsepower than the RX8. The latter is a 4 seater car, with four doors. It can lap the Nurburgring in the same time as a Nissan 350Z since it is also a well balanced car and the engine provides lightweight handling and a lower center of gravity and can be pushed back further than a convential piston engine. The main difference between the two is the layout and induction systems. Both are great handling cars with great suspension systems, and if you take good care of them very reliable. The RX7 is a legendary car because of its power (290HP Japan Spec) and can be tuned up to 700+RWHP.

RX-8 is a updates RX-7. i think it is the only Mazda on the US market that has th Wankel rotary engine. A engine that has no pistons but a rotor(sometimes 2). Mazda was the only company to offer this rotary engine in a successful commercial configuration. For the side of the rotary engine, it creates far more power than a piston engine, but there are some emissions issues as well as a couple of design hurdles that have yet to be fully overcome.
