we can check it in the prefrences under the catagory Archive, but how can we check it origionally where they are physically saved, like a text file or some thing like that.

They have to be stored on Yahoo servers. But, since they are text files with no options or attachments, then the files are pretty small. Yahoo probably has a few Terabyte servers, but there is a limit to how much data you can store. This also may be the reason that they don't let you upload pictures for your avatar anymore.

are u referring to the yahoo messenger instant messaging?well, its easy,, u can actually find ur msg archive when u click "Contacts" on ur ym window...when u clickl message archive, u'l find different folders..each pertaining to the contacts u have on ur yahoo messenger list...u can alter ur settings by clicking "Messenger" on ur ym window, then click "Preferences"...there u'l find different categories u wish to alter...Good luck Buddy!
