Decide what is being asked.
What is the length of 5/9 of the pole.
Understand the question:
The examiner (or sod for short) wants to know the length of a portion of a pole.
Decide how to do it.
The easiest and the approach most ppl would take would be find out the length of the pole and multiply it by 5/9. That's how everyone seems to have done it above. So lets take another approach.
Lets say the answer you want is "x".
i.e. x = 5/9 * length of pole
Given:
3.6 = 2/5 * length of pole
now combine the two equations (might be easier if you wrote one letter for length of pole) so that you eliminate "length of pole"
There are lots of ways to do this. Lets just divide the top equation by the bottom one (noting that both are not zero)
x/3.6 = 5/9 : 2/5 (note: length of pole / length of pole = 1)
x = 5/9 * 5/2 * 3.6 = 90/18 =5 which is the answer.

L=(3.60)/2/5
