I love the reasons people give for anti-viruses being the best. *rolleyes*
Things like: "AVG - it's Free".
So what if it's free - is it any good? Sadly the answer is no.
So many people now have AVG on their computers and they're all gonna get hit one day soon. The protection offered by this program is seriously lacking - I installed a rival program on a few PCs lately that had AVG, Spybot and Ad-Aware and the new product went on to remove over 30 very serious infections all these three had missed.
I wouldn't touch or trust these programs if I were you...

Some people say Norton and others will say McAfee. That's understandable because they are like household names when it comes to virus protection. What many people do not realize is that both of these programs are memory hogs and if you don't have sufficient memory on your PC your programs will lag and possibly lock up. Also, these powerhouse AV programs sometimes do not interact well with other software and even installing a Windows update or a Software patch update can cause major issues.
What I recommend is NOD32 it uses 20 times less processor power to run and runs on only a fraction of memory as compared to Norton and McAfee. In addition, NOD32 has been tested side-by-side with Norton and McAfee and actually found more viruses. Another good thing is that it is free. My 2nd choice would be AVG, it requires a little more processor power rand memory but still when comparing it to the powerhouses it still runs better on most PC's and interacts well with all software. It to is also free to use.

You also NEED spyware protection, and a firewall.
All below are FREE
I use all of the following Free software with Windows XP SP2 and Internet Explorer with MSN toolbar and the pop-up blocker turned on and have never had a single problem with my computer sense Microsoft came out with SP2. (knock on wood.) (And be sure to keep Windows and the following software Updated)
The best Anti-virus is: AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. (www.grisoft.com)
The Best Spyware defense is: SpyBot Search and Destroy (www.spybot.info)
AND: AdAware SE (www.lavasoft.com)
AND Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.info/kb/)
The best Firewall besides the one that comes with Windows is: Zone Alarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/co... or just (www.zonelabs.com) and select the FREE version.
These are all FREE and are all that are required. There is no reason to pay for this kind of software, except to give a donation to the writers if you can.
ALL the above programs are recommended and should be run on a regular basis. With some the free versions they must be run manually.
The best way to avoid getting any Malware (virus, Trojan's, spyware, etc) is to practice safe computing. Microsoft and many others have countless articles on the subject of safe computing. (something I think should be taught in schools)

I will relayed again here (please see my other answer through my history), regarding my encounters with all antivirus out there.
Our MIS Department (I was computer programmer) decided to contain all the viruses other departments are being faced. I happened to get this ANTIVIR, and other co-workers (in MIS Dept.), uses also other antivirus. Our company really flocked lot of viruses out there, say it and we ALMOST have it.
I really laugh when they catch some virus but not all, were almost in the contest. Really, ANTIVIR got all the viruses which other cannot even detect.
In reality, you may experiment for yourself, if you noticed that an antivirus cannot detect such virus then change your antivirus. Just last month, I got virus attached from YAHOO email, which should not be happened as there are default antivirus protection use by Yahoo.
Mind you, for more than 6 years now, all my computers didn’t get any virus.

Avast is one of the best. Even some of the IPS have told me it's what they use on their pc's. It's the only one I use. I've had Norton and McAfee and both have let my pc get infected. Another great thing about Avast is it's free. If you choose it,get the home edition. It has a scanner running on messengers also. You are also alerted each time a new version comes out.

I have Norton Internet Security 2006 and also Webroot Spyware and my computer runs like a dream. I have had Norton for about 3 years, I upgrade it every year (which is relatively easy), and it has never given me any problems, while it has caught 5 viruses that were trying to enter my computer. I believe that this is the best protection that you can get.
