An ancient tradition going back to the earliest pulp SF magazines. Competing for eyeballs on a rack full of teen romance, cowboy, and true detective stories, the illustrators made the best use of anatomy to display heroic and/or sexual imagery. Girls in bikinis and space helmets wandering around on the surface of the Moon, I kid you not!

Tights are the next best thing to drawing a nude figure, when you can't get away with the "real thing" due to prevailing community standards & etc. The rest, as they say, is history...

My guess is to convey the idea that fashion of the future will be different from the present. However, it's not universal that future people are wearing tights. I think the Babylon 5 stuck with regular trousers.

I suspect it's intended to show an organised society, where loose clothing shows a lack of harmony. Tights show conformity to the new utopia, a common theme. There could be a lot of reasons, but I believe those most often are it. It's mainly a matter of order and harmony and how to represent it.

Tights are in. Dont you see them teenage girls wearing tights under they skirts like they some old grandma or something?

Because, in the future, there will be less clothing. People will have to conserve outerwear, hence, the tights...

in the 50s and 60s (maybe earlier) people thought that in the future, people would were thermal controlled clothing that looked, well, like underwear.

the idea seems to have stuck.

to show off their beautiful bodies. like as if in the future every ones bodies would be in perfect shape.
