I’m not sure I understand what you mean by “tap into your dreams”. However, there is a practice called conscious dreaming (there is a good book on the subject by the same name I believe). You condition yourself to come “awake” in your dreams, that is, when you dream; you know that you are dreaming. This allows you to use the dreamscape to work through scenarios that you will face in real life in a less “real” setting, so that you can overcome your fears. Also by coming awake in your dreams, you can do some really fun things, such as flying and walking through walls. As you gain more control over your dreams and your fear, you find that it is easier to get into the fun stuff. However, even though it did not take a long time for me to begin to make rapid progress, I found that I missed the break from thinking all of the time and felt less and less rested after sleep. In terms of symbolism in dreams (here you might want to look into the writings of Carl Jung), it appears that we all create our own symbolic language. The general symbols found in books of that type, generally do not seem to benefit one much as far as dream interpretation, and it seems one has to learn one’s own internal language, which is a fair amount of work for surprisingly little gain. My experience indicates that a journal of your waking experiences and your reactions to them is much more beneficial than a dream journal. It is in my experience much more beneficial to learn to act, during the waking hours, in such a way as to have peace of mind when the end of the day comes so you can sleep easy and have a restful night, rather than to struggle with the obscure and difficult symbolism of dreams. For me anyway, the payoff of dream study was not worth the effort I had to put in to it.

First, I recommend that you keep a diary book next to your bed. Whenever you awaken from a dream, immediately write it down in the book. Don't try to clarify the thoughts or the images, just write the stuff down as fast as you can. Because within matter of minutes, the memory of the dream will fade. No matter how hard you try, you won't be able to recall all the details.
Now that you're doing this on a regular basis, you'll find that you're better attuded to your dreams, and you'll become aware of yourself during the dream state. Eventually, you may even be able to tell that you're in a dream, and be able to follow it consciously. If your goal is to be able to manipulate your dreams actively, then you will need to do this for quite some time.
It took me about 3-4 months to be able to recognize consistently that I am in a dream and be a conscious observer. To actively control the dream is actually much much more difficult, and it just may depend on your abilities.
Good luck and have fun!
PS - keeping a dream diary was alot of fun for me, and years afterwards I would go back and read it, and be amazed by my dreams.

Keeping a diary of your dreams is a good start.
There are different types of dreams:
1. Daydreams
Studies show that we all have the tendency to daydream an average of 70-120 minutes a day. Day dreaming is classified as a level of consciousness between sleep and wakefulness.
2. Lucid Dreams
Lucid dreams occurs when you realize you are dreaming. Most dreamers wake themselves up once they realize that they are only dreaming. Other dreamers have cultivated the skill to remain in the lucid state of dreaming.
3. Nightmares
A nightmare is a disturbing dream that causes the dreamer to wake up feeling anxious and frightened. Nightmares may be a response to real life trauma and situations.
4. Recurring Dreams
Recurring dreams repeat themselves with little variation in story or theme. These dreams may be positive, but most often they are nightmarish in content. Dreams may recur because a conflict depicted in the dream remains unresolved or ignored.
5. Healing Dreams
Healing dreams serve as messages for the dreamer in regards to their health. Many dream experts believe that dreams can help us avoid potential health problems and help us to heal when we are ill. Our bodies are able to communicate to us through our dreams.
6. Prophetic Dreams
Prophetic dreams, also referred to as precognitive or pyschic dreams, are dreams that seemingly foretell the future. One rational theory to explain this phenomenon is that our dreaming mind is able to piece together bits of information and observation that we normally overlook or that we do not seriously consider.
7. Signal Dreams
Signal dreams help you how to solve problems or make decisions in your waking life.
8. Epic Dreams
Epic dreams (or Great dreams) are so huge, so compelling, and so vivid that you cannot ignore them. The details of such dreams remain with you for years, as if your dreamt it last night. These dreams possess much beauty and contain many archetypal symbology. When you wake up from such a dream, you feel that you have discovered something profound or amazing about yourself or about the world. It feels like a life-changing experience.

keep a dream journal and what you remember of your dreams if you remember any write it down. if you see things in the background, noise, words, smells, colors, etc how you feel in the dream as well and how the dream made you feel. Tell yourself before you are going to bed that you are going to remember your dreams. Eventually when your dreams get carried away you can kind of make sure that nothing "bad" happens.
