My 883 leaks oil at higher rpm/speeds from between the oil tank and battery area when full to 3 qts. Idling or driving slow its okay. I ve been told Harleys have an Operating range for oil quanity and maybe even if I have serviced it to full by the manufacturers specs, I may have over filled it. Is this true, or may I have a more serious problem? Thanx

if there is too much oil it will have to come out. if you do not do it, the machine will blow it out the vent into the air cleaner.
you may also have a weak spring in the check ball valve at the oil pump, allowing oil to drain into the crankcase (wet sumping). this will blow out all over your right leg and right side of the bike.
finally, check that you do not have a leaky oil line or connection at the back or bottom of the oil tank. that can be messy, too.
good luck and have a nice summer.

You are right I have a 2000 heritage my husband recently changed by bike over to synthetic oil and overfilled it according to the spec of the 2000 heritage mechanics book. I think the book said to add 3 quarts and this overfilled the bike, it was sitting up right, not on the peg. He had to take some oil out, to get the oil down to the correct amount.

Sounds like you get blasted with oil on your right leg as well. Very common problem. Sounds like you added oil with your bike leaning on the jiffy stand. Then you overfilled the oil tank. Drain the excess oil as soon as possible or you are going to build up too much pressure in your motor as well as foaming the oil creating more problems. If you take care of the problem early enough, you should be alright. Good luck.

It is possible you are overfilling! However I'd check the oil line for cracks. Do you have an oil cooler on the bike? Check oil lines. never overfill. better to run a little low that to overfill one.

take out like a half qt. and then check it.
might have not drained out all the oil when changing
also have to check oil hot not cold...
