I am not embarrassed to say that I love musicals. I do.
I guess I prefer the modern ones i.e. last 30 years (i guess not so modern anymore). My favourite is Jesus Christ Superstar. I think it was one that was powerful, funky, creative. The music is still so cool.
Not that I'm religous but I also like Godspell. The songs are really memorable and everyone of them I like. neither of these are huge dance shows so I would have to also say Cats because of the sheer surprise of this musical when it came out in 1982/83. Who would think that watching grown adults as cats would capture the public's interest. The dancing movement in this one is superb.
My newest favourite is Avenue Q. It is just plain hilarious. I laughed all the way through it and am singing "it sucks to me" right now.
I guess I have to also say Sound of Music and The Wizard of Oz just because of their cult movie status. ... the list goes on

i'm no longer a large musical theatre individual, yet 'adult men & Dolls' has continually been my regularly going on musical. that's only a calming, classic tutor. i recognize the song, i recognize the characters, and that i recognize the placing. in truth, i'm a wide fan of the unique Damon Runyon memories, and that total era usually (i'm a swing dancer, so i recognize something 1920's-40's). My grandmother became a Broadway dress clothier round that aspect; she also loves the tutor, and has informed me many memories about engaged on B'way for the time of WWII. Plus, i latterly chanced on out that yet another relative of mine worked for Frank Loesser (the composer). i assumed that became extremely cool. ;-)

without doubt, the best film musical has got to be Grease.
The best stage musical was the original London production of "Hair"...1967 if my memory serves me correctly.
