why werent the origional joanne and mimi's in Rent the movie?

i, personally, like the cast from the movie better than the musical. but why did they get new joanne's and mimi's for the film? thanks!

The original Mimi, Daphne Rubin-Vega, was getting pretty old. She admitted as much herself. Not to mention she was pregnant at the time of shooting. Fredi Walker, the original Joanne, bowed out due to her age, as well.

Fredi Walker didn't want to do the film, both because she was too old for her part and because she doesn't do much acting anymore.

Daphne Rubin-Vega couldn't be in the film because - officially - she was pregnant during filming. I think that most people realize it was REALLY because she looks too old [although obviously the pregnancy didn't help either], especially to play a character who looks like she's sixteen. Daphne is still REALLY upset about this, though, and has mentioned it in a few interviews. She's said that she doesn't know why Chris Columbus couldn't have waited until she had the baby to film the movie and she still hasn't seen the movie becasue she's so upset.

I imagine it was very hard for her, since everyone else was in the movie. And not all of them look that young!

I either go to the movies or wait till the movie comes out on DVD, I stop renting a long time ago.

Possibly because the actors weren't as good as they needed to be... which may be why you liked the movie better.
