Where are your ancestors from? My teacher, who is from Guinea, West Africa, has a philosophy that no-one here in America is "truly American" except for the Native Americans. We are all from somewhere else. All the black people he sees and knows are, to him, AFRICANS, not "African-Americans".
I'm not really an "American"; my people are not from here. My people came from Prussia, a country that no longer exists! But, if I moved to Africa, I would call myself a Prussian. Definitely not American. And not an African either, because I am not from there. Just because I moved to a different country, that does not change my culture and my heritage.

Sure. I know a white guy in S Africa who refers to himself in such a manner. It freaks African-Americans out, until they see what he is saying.

no whitey you're in Africa now, not in America, course if you were born in Africa and came here i think it would be funny to go around Compton telling everyone you're African American, and you would be in the right :)

I don't think so. I think you would have to have been born in Africa but your heritage was all American. Like that actress Charlize Theron, her family is American but she was born in Africa.

who determines what polically correct you can call yourself what
