Anything by Ernest "Papa" Hemingway, Vonnegut, or Kerouac. Mostly Hemingway though; he'll change your life.
You gotta go with the classics. Old Russian authors are good to, i.e. Dostoevsky, Leo Tolstoy, but they may be hard to follow, depending on your reading level.

I love Laurell K. Hamilton, she has a great kick-butt vampire heroine in her Anita Blake vampire hunter series. Sherrilyn Kenyonn is good too I like her Dark Hunter series. Keri Arthor, Anne Rice, Stephen King, are a few of my favorites too.
