A weblog, which is usually shortened to blog, is a type of website where entries are made (such as in a journal or diary), displayed normally with the newest item first. Blogs often offer commentary or news on a particular subject, such as food, politics, or local news; some function as more personal online diaries. A typical blog combines text, images, and links to other blogs, web pages, and other media related to its topic. Most blogs are primarily textual although many focus on photographs, videos or audio. The word blog can also be used as a verb, meaning adding an entry to a blog. The first blogs date back to 1994 with the first popular blogs starting around 2001. The September 11 attacks helped them to grow as many people used their blogs to express their feelings.

A "blog" is an automated substitute for building a personal website. It enables people who do not know HTML, or how to do generic website tasks, to post their own page on the 'net.
Blogs are also /very/ convenient, compared to "the real thing", and there is a major competition among blog service providers to build user base and traffic. So, lots of neat bells and whistles are available. "These kids today" often make their blog(s) a key part of their social lives as well.
Some folks make a minor amount of money by placing ads on their blog pages - but it takes a lot of traffic, a.k.a. a lot of very interesting posts, to make this happen. Another use for a blog, is to store and share links to useful resources, fun stuff, etc.; the Stumbleupon service exists for the latter purpose and works well.

I don't know if it can be done, since there isn't any intelligent, logical explanation for the popularity of blogs. I find it even stranger that someone could come up with such a long explanation of what blogs are without really addressing the question about what the intent and use is.

Well, blogs can be something like an online journal, or like an editorial in a newspaper. It's a way to share your thoughts on certain subjects or events on a large scale. As for how to use them, it depends on which blog service you elect to use. There are some that are very complex, and others that are simple to figure out, like 360 or Myspace, for instance.

A blog (which is short for weblog) is an online journal. Popular blog sites include livejournal.com and myspace.com. To use one, one types in text into a box such as this one and clicks submit. The text, though usually in journal or revelatory style, is often used to promote political issues or those related to journalism.
Since they provide an open forum that can be read by as many people as you choose, they can be used for as many different things as the imagination allows. Examples include staying connected with friends, writing essays, or describing the color of your socks.

BLOG is shortened from web log. It's just a place for someone, anyone, to say their 2 cents worth. Some are just vanity pieces, some technical, and people can respond to a blogger's comments and that creates what is called a thread. Joe's comment, Frank's return, Joe's answer, Frank' response... that sort of thing. Just personal soap boxes.

Blogs are like a diary on the internet. They can be public or private. Yahoo! has one on 360 pages that is free.

A blog is an online journal. You can use it to share information about your life, express your political views, promote your art or writing, or become part of an online community of people with similar interests. People can then comment on whatever you post (unless you disable comments) and you can talk about it. It can help you get to know people online better.
The exact details of how you use them vary from service to service, but basically you just update when you want to update, and comment when you want to, and enjoy the chance to communicate.

As I use them , to "journal"...just like the old diaries or a journal......you can write your feelings, opinions, experiences and share them with the world or just those you put on your list.
It is fun and a great way to express your self or get feelings out.
