i am in the proses in teaching myself guitar
my mom had a beatles hits book for like piano and guitars so I mostly play that stuff it's easy-er but if i have to do just notes i can do that too
my fingers didnt hurt that bad bcuz i had fooled around with the guitar b4 i decided to learn it and i only played for like 10 mins a day
if you are like a 5-hour a day pratice person i would get nylon strings or and aqustick guitar until you really know how to play and your not gonna do classical guitar

Your never too old, although your chances of being on stage with thousands of girls throwing their panties at you are slim. One note though, guitar isn't the most fun instrument to learn, and can be quite awkward and painful on your fingers at first. But once you get past that, you'll love it. Oh yeah, stay away from the on-line B.S. That crap won't help you at all. I taught myself, and many great famous people have as well, but unless you are Duane Allman or Hendrix, you should look into taken lessons. Preferably with a teacher that specializes in the style of music that you are most into.
