Betta's are relatively cheap, you can get them at Walmart or Petco from 3 to 5 $$... it depends, as another person was saying, on color, etc. But they are really cheap for a fish. If you do not know a lot about Betta's I suggest that you check up on them first and their care. Betta's, although pretty, are very agressive fish... although, they will not harm you, you must make sure that you have either a Male and a Female, or JUST a Male, or Just a Female. The Males are extremely aggressive, and if you put two in a fish bowl, they will fight, and one will die. You also, as stupid as it sounds, make sure that they are not next to a mirror. No Joke, if you put a Betta next to a mirror, it will see its reflection and start fighting with itself through the fish bowl. The only problem, is that it doesnt know how to stop. In the end, most places have the cups that they come in labeled as to whether they are male or female. If they aren't you can ask a sales associtate if he can tell you the difference. If they can't then use your own judgement. Males are very pretty, they have vibrant colors, deep reds, blue, greens etc. Long flowing Fins, they are just really pretty. I am not sure of a lot of people that buy the females becuase they are not pretty (at least not to me); the are dull colored, either brownish, or redish... but not bright and vibrant.
Hope this helps

Up here in central Canada, they can go for $3 - $8, depending on the pet store. For a better quality fish, you would be paying closer to $10, possibly more.
For a female, you'd be paying about $3 - 4. Most places will have on the tanks whether their fish are male or female. However they can be quite inaccurate, so I'd ask a store employee.

The Betta I bought cost $6 to $8 for Females. As for Males, minimum $10 and above for a good one. Depends on their colour, finnage and rarity also..

Depends on their color, breed, sex, and who you buy them from. Good breeding stock can run to around $100 for a sibling pair of good color. Generally in the pet store males run about $3 with crown tails running closer to $5. Most of these are blues, and/or reds. Females are often around $2-$3. Mom&Pop, and speciality stores sometimes carry a wider range of colors, and breeds for a bit more. Generally unless it's a different color than blue, or red you shouldn't pay more than $5. Even if it's a white, yellow or purple more than $20 is excessive unless it's a sibling pair for breeding.
Note females can be nearly as colorful as males despite their short fins. Sadly most females you buy in pet stores are there because they have been reject for breeding. (Mostly due to poor coloration.)

You can usually find a beta fish for under 5 dollars at a pet store or even at your local walmart.

They are overall inexpensive 2-5 bucks, but there are those for show (contests) so I'm sure they can be quiet expensive, Good luck and enjoy your betta.
