At least 3 months before taking your first test. If you do badly your first time, figure out what you've been doing wrong (including your studying methods) take a month break if you want, but continue studying. SAT prep classes help some people A LOT, but not everyone, so find out what works for you. In any case practice really does help (I didn't think so at first).

About 12 years of age for the first test. Take it again when you are 15, then again at 16 or 17, depending on when you will graduate from high school.
