I'd just like your opinion - many countries which seem to have a history of being socially liberal, like Canada, Germany, Australia, Japan, Mexico, have chosen conservatives/moderates to run their countries - why?
I don't need details - I know the candidates in each of the countries listed above and the situations in each of the elections, but I feel like I am missing some trend - a trend that was never predicted by any magazine or news organization that I know of.

Well, you're looking in the wrong direction for the trend. Actually, it is that liberal parties have continued to progress down a liberal path & left many people behind along the way. They've been frustrated with not changing the world fast enough & so nominated highly liberal candidates that don't appeal to the highly necessary moderate wings of their parties. As such they've handed elections to conservative parties. At the same time, there has been/is going on a generational transition among populaations. Conservative parties now don't want to rewind & change the world back to what it supposedly once was, nor are they uber rich crazies that don't care about anyone else. They are mostly just for personal & moral responsibility & frustrated with govt giving too much away to those unwilling to work for it (that's simplistic & doesn't reflect the charity aspect of conservative voters).
All this said, have you also noticed the communist/socialist resurgence in South America? In both cases you can look to their history of 50-60 years ago & see the slow swing with the failure of programs of that generation & the shaping forces of war/economics. All politics is cyclical & you can map the swing in any country or region & then find key events along that timeline that motivated change. It's jsut a natural multi-generation progression of philosophical thought based on world events. The trend will continue for some time before it turns back the other way.

Your news media is very bias. Stop rolling your eyes. If they were in line with the views of the people then the winners would not look so conservative to you.
Look at the condition the systems are in in those countries, compared to a less liberal systems they are not fairing so well. The rich do not feel the pain of the public systems, nor do the poor, it is in so many cases the workers, the mass of the vote. If you are left down year after year it is clear that the practice is not working. So a more sound (e.i. crazy right-wing, conservative, hardliner, nut, cowboy; as read in Newsweek, NYT.) is voted in to fix things. If you can not run a cooperation you can not run a country. It is when those that are running the country try to run a few corporations at the same time that the problems start.
Now I think I just missed the question didn't I.

You hit the nail on the button. Its moderates not nutcase conservatism. And that's because elections in country's tend to fluctuate. In the next elections liberals will probable win then conservatives, then back to moderates.
In the U.S Conservatism is dead. Even the neo-cons admit it will be a rough year. Only nutcases can be Conservatives anymore. And in Britain Tony Blair has lower ratings than Bush if you can believe it.
All polls done by moderate pollsters show the U.S and Britain going to Liberals. Like I said Conservatism is on its way out the door with all the other conservatism morons.

I just wanted to make one brief point: so called conservatives in Europe (I'm not sure about the rest of the world) are just about equivalent to the Democrats in the U.S.—that is the U.S.'s political system is much farther to the right than most European nations. It's funny...I thought we were supposed to be the progressive ones. Also, we did get one liberal with Prodi in Italy, and hopefully Obrador will overturn the election results in Mexico!

Because liberalism is a mental disorder. Their policies make no sense. Taxing people into oblivion. They delude the weak and the simple. Liberals think that everyone is stupid except them. That's why the leftists think THEY know how to use your money better than you do.
And, liberals can't call a spade a spade. WMD in Iraq isnt' WMD unless the liberals say it's WMD. That's the type of waffling crap that you get from the absurd liberals.

I would think the trend is money.... Money is power, look at alot of conservatives, don't they tend to be wealthy? And lots of people who aren't so wealthy think that wealth will rub off on them so they vote conservative. A good example is Bush and the oil thing....... So rock on you conservatives.

two fold... quickly...
A. more perceived threats (terror, WMD, etc)....conservatives traditionally tougher on threats in people's minds...
B. things seem to have a way of going back and forth... like the tides... this seems to be the "conservative season" but with the bang up job that most of them are doing, it's not going to last long...

Because most people see that democrats are just a tad bit shy of being insane/stupid. they offer a lot of criticism with no real solutions.
