It's not that getting admission to colleges is "difficult" so much that it's "competitive". It's a matter of supply and demand, and popular colleges will base admissions on (1) intelligence, (2) aptitude for study, (3) what a student can contribute to the collegiate community (so some preference will be given to foreign students and to students with an interesting background or ability), (4) present and future money-raising value: thus, sporting ability, wealth, family background, alumni parentage, etc.
Limiting admission based on the above is often called "numeris clausus". Many, perhaps most, continental European universities are open to all applicants who pass the underlying entrance exams, which may consist in having the proper baccalaureat (secondary school) credentials. Sometimes only medical school has a numerical entry limit. The result is that half of the students admitted fail and drop out, and (as one Belgian professor told me) in his (highly regarded) faculty only 10% of students who enter graduate in the minimum number of years (meaning that most either drop out or re-take courses).

A college is like a business, they want the best customers who will reflect a positive image for their college. And make them look good in every aspect.
There are many factors on how colleges pick their students, the main ones are:
The higher GPA the better
Excellent attendance
Financial status (enough to pay for full tuition)
Overall excellent work ethic
There are other mitigating factors, which some colleges add to suit their needs. Such as being a top sports player, or you attended another highly recognized school, whether or not you had private or public schooling, etc.
So if you were to apply to a college, they would ask you to bring in your past school records, financial statements, ID, etc. and then they assess whether or not you fit their criteria.
If you had poor attendance, it will affect your chances, the same goes for, if you are poor and cannot afford tuition, or you had an average or even poor GPA. For each negative, you are put lower on the list as a prospective student.
It all boils down to competition, image, and money.

Colleges want to take students that they know will make a commitment towards college, take it seriously, and help make the college look better. So if they think you aren't capable of any of these things you probably won't get accepted.

Your grade point average and experience is too low for the colleges you are applying to. Get some work experience in your desired major, if possible, and try again.

It's their way of creating barriers. There are other ways to get into the schools you want as well. I am going to the adult program for undergrad at a top 10 School, It was easier to get into and cheaper as well. It all boils down to doing your homework! Good luck!

AS U KNOW ALREADY THAT GOODNESS IS ALWAYS A RESULT OF HARDWORKING. SO GETTING IN THE COLLEGE MEANS BECOMING SOMEONE WITH A CAREER, AND REQUIREMENTS SHOULD BE THERE TO SELECT BEST CANDIDATES WHO ARE ABLE TO HANDLE THE SITUATION. ABOVE ALL ACCOMODATIONS ARE LIMITED AND FINANCE IS A PROBLEM TO MANY.
