Good question.

Depends on what you like

Go to stores and play.

Ibanez makes a very good guitar.

Mexican Fenders are also nice.

People break down into three catagories

Fender Strat (single coil) -- usually edgy rock

Gibson Les Paul (double coil) -- Usually blues

Gibson/Guild semi-hollow (double coil) -- usually Jazz

You can probably also find a good American Tele if you look hard for near that price, but the Tele will need work. Horrible bridge and nasal sound, but the fingering is great! Small neck.

If you have large hands, the Gibson or Ibanez.

Small hands, Strat or Tele

Thin sound, Strat or Tele

Thicker sound, Les Paul or Guild or Ibanez

Hondo has made some nice older guitar, but you have to look hard!

A lot of people say the Fender cheapo ain't bad. What's it called? Japanese (or today Chinese) something or other.

If you're into guitar playing after a while, you will WANT or DEMAND and American Strat or Les Paul DeLuxe or for jazz a 335

We are talking $3,000 used

If you're REALLY into playing and Jazz, you need to check out used D'Angelicos. We are talking $7,500 used and abused

Go to the store and play

Spend time

Go back for months

Play

YOu want a guitar you can tune
and one that feels good in your hands

I hate to say it, but it's true, a guitar is like a girl.

She's gotta feel good in your arms and hands and make you squirt so bad it hurts.

That's a girl you don't let go of or get away (and you wax her, wipe her off, put her into an expensive case and take real good care of her), that's a guitar you keep forever.

If you already have a guitar, first buy a tuner. Korg makes a great little tuner for under $20.00. DONT get the one with the LED's because its hard to see in the sunlight! Get the one with the sweeping needle. I frogot the model number. Next, get a Metronome. I think EVERY musician needs one to practice with. You will use it to practice chord changes and scales as you progress. For instructional stuff, go to the Library near you and see if they have any Video's before you buy one. You can find them there sometimes. If not, search Musicians Friend at WWW.Musiciansfriend.com. They have GREAT videos. Learn your chords first! Just throwing scales at people make LITTLE sense! Chords will allow you to PLAY songs! Hey, if you dont have a guitar, check out Ibanez, Dean, BC Rich or Oscar Schmidt. They have lower priced guitars on sale and they are decent. Epiphone, Fender and such as that cost more, but that will come later. Good luck.

My son wanted to learn how to play guitar and I hired a guy to give him lessons. He told me to go to walmart and get one of those guitars. He said it would be fine for a beginner. I got him the guitar and small amp for around $250. The instructor told me to start him with an electric because the neck is smaller and his small hands would do better.

Check out Musician's Friend on the internet. They always have great specials on beginner guitar kits. Sometimes they will offer a great electric guitar package for as little as $100.

To avoid buying a billion guitars in the future, start out with the best equipment you can get in your budget. I'd say an Ibanez or imported Fender for you. Once you have it, the most important thing is to practice playing anything you hear and stick to it.

Start with a $30 acoustic guitar and the Hapy Traub guitar course (with CD!).

If you give up 1/4 of the way through, you saved the bux for an electric guitar.

If you get all the way through and start getting good, "your fingers will tell you" which electric is in budget and good enough for you.

But start acoustic and get good at it before going electric with an amp.

Well I would recommend that you check in www.musiciansfriend.com or other online guitar retailers and look for beginner packages. At your budget you can afford a pretty good guitar. Also stick with known brands like Epiphone, Squire, fender, Ibanez, Washburn, and others.

I would start by Looking on websites like Ebay for a cheap guitar. My dad bought lots of guitars off ebay and you can get them for great prices...make sure people arent scammin you tho...and make sure the action on the strings isnt to high or too low...i have been playing guitar for about 3 years now and i have a fender strat. I love it to death. Keep playin after you get that guitar...play even tho those callusus are gonna hurt.....
Then later you can check musiciansfriend. com for strings, straps, the works...and even for a cheap guitar

Many start by checking out videos and books from the library.
