YES,USING A LOWER THAN RECOMMENDED WILL CAUSE KNOCKING AND THE ENGINE WON'T PERFORM AS INTENDED. USING HIGHER IS A WASTE OF MONEY.
LOOK ON THE DOOR OF THE GAS TANK OR ON THE DOOR JAM (DRIVERS SIDE) FOR THE RECOMMENDED OCTANE.

Octane is added to gas to retard the rate of burn in the cylinder thus eliminating pre-ignition or "spark knock" as it is commonly referred to.
Lower octane has a higher energy content than higher octane gas.

In a word it can affect your vehicle's performance. Too low and the fuel ignites out of control and can cause a melt down of the engine. Too high octane and you are simply overspending for fuel that will not benefit anyone but the gas company.

In vehicles that the engine still has a distributor, fill the fuel tank with the grade fuel you wish to operate on, then advance the distributor timing until you get spark knock on acceleration, then back it off until no more spark knock and secure the lock nut. Your timing is now set.

in case your motor vehicle calls for a higher octane its because it makes use of better compression in the engine. the better the octane the extra valuable those kinds of autos run. even as the gasoline creates an explosion on your engine higher compression autos want a higher pop to get the most perfect reaction. i'm guessing that you've a subaru or an SUV. higher octane gasoline also has anti knocking homes that prevent your motor vehicle from Knocking or Pinging when you end driving it. reducing the octane gained't extremely damage your motor vehicle yet you'll journey decrease performance and extremely worse gasoline mileage. Race autos do not use one hundred ten octane or higher gasoline for no reason.

Not in most cars, since they are made to run on regular fuel. Some higher performance engines will run better, because they are designed to be able to take advantage of higher compression and advanced spark. I've known some cars that are designed to run on regular that get noticeably WORSE mileage on high octane gas.

just high performance engines..
octane is the rate of heat that the fuel burns.
Almost all gasoline engines don't require any more than
87 octane fuel.
