The Kings and queens, and nobles of the Middle Ages lived in the castles. But castles were also symbols of their power, and fortresses against rivals who might try to make war on them. These grand homes were built between the ninth and the fifteenth centuries all over Europe. Many have been preserved and most of them have been turned into Hotels and museums.

Macduff Castle is by the beach five minutes away from my Grans house in Fife, Scotland. It's ruined, only two walls remain with a spiral staircase in the corner... leading down to the dungeon and up to the top of the tower (complete with archer slit windows!) It was incredible fun playing there as a kid.

There's one out here near San Francisco too - an authentic Scottish Castle.
There are lots of castles and stately homes all around the world and many of them allow you to tour parts of them that are setup in a museum style. There are also scores more in ruins that you can check out too. All over Europe.
Here information on loads of them:

There actually is a castle in Las Vegas, NV. Built near a lake, it is constructed of stone with turrets. The dungeon in the basement is actually a cellar. Location - The Lakes.
