It is an enormous ancient monument, built in Southern England over 3,000 years ago. The monument consists of many large stones, some weighing up to 100,000 pounds, arranged in circular patterns. It may have been used to observe the monuments of the sun and moon and then to create calendars, may be! Stonehenge is a mystery no one really knows

Near the town of Avebury in Wiltshire, England. Stonehenge is perhaps the finest of the British megalithic monuments. It stands in the center of Salisbury Plain, surrounded by a complex of cemeteries and ritual sites. Stonehenge is believed to date to about 2780 BC, near the end of the Neolithic period. The function of the monument is thought to have been spiritual, but the arrangement of the megaliths also suggest possible astronomical uses, such as a calendar.

everything the person below is pretty true. the best educated guess was that it was used as a part of a funeral like ritual, where the body would be carried from another momument known as woodhenge which has long since turned into nothingness with the time. only small remains are still there. and they would taken from woodhenge to stonehenge. it also coincided with a ceremony used basically to beg the sun to return before the winter. from what ive seen, and from what most experts have seen. that seems to be the most logical explanation.
