Are there really people out there who believe that the world is only 6000 years old? Are there people who are so out of touch that they will accept anything without applying rational thought? And how can they, with any conscience give this as an answer to young children asking the questions.
I think that if someone wishes to live in a bubble; they should not share with others.

OMG, I couldn't agree more. It is so absurd. It pains me they are teaching thier kids this crap as if it were, well, yes..gospel.
They are trying to make it true by getting some zealot "scientists" to make it seem as if there is some kind of debate going on in the science community, as if there were more than one theory! This is such a repugnant and irresponsible way to validate your relgion (bible worship). --Not all Christians think this way, just the wacko decendants of the puritans and quakers.--the baptists, evangelicals, born again, "Christian".
I can't understand how they can believe the earth only just cooled as civilization as we know it was beginning to take shape.
The fact that they give too little time for massive geological formations to arise alone is amazing to me that they could rationalize that it makes any sense at all!! You would think that these people would have given all this up when we found the dinosaurs, but NO! they try to fit them in there with us in the Garden of Eden and say civilized man was running away from hungry T Rex's!!!! --and AMAZINGLY every single dinosaur and odd distant relatives of animals died suddenly in the flood!! If you believe wholy in the bible, you can fit anything into it's story without even batting an eye and swallow it like it tastes great!
It's so absurd and makes so little sense, they may as well be trying to tell us the earth is indeed flat, they have proof!! (you know all those pictures of earth from space are faked), and the universe indeed revolves around our tiny little planet, yes, that's right, little ol' us! any astronomers who try to say different are just conspiring to kill God!!!!
I fear for humanity.

It's funny that people can hold so tightly to their religious dogma that the only answer they have is one that is obviously been disproven. There is not even much of an attempt to append that school of thought to reflect something along the lines of "Civilization was founded about 6000 years ago."

I have even seen attempts made to claim that when "God" created the world, he created it with fossilized bones and such in place in the ground. By that theory, "God" could have created the world yesterday, and fabricated this vast tapestry of backstory, with each of us having the equivilent of pre-fab memories in our one day old brains.

As far as their motivations in giving a false answer without any conscience, well, religion is founded on very arrogant concepts. For that reason, it is often clung to tightly by very arrogant people. For some of them, it is not enough for them to accept that others have different opinions. These selected people (who actually are not representative of most christians) must not only confront those others, but feel that they must somehow save them.

the international's oldest recorded tree is a 9550 12 months previous spruce in the Dalarna province of Sweden. way cool, i'm hoping they do all they could to keep it alive. i'd like to ascertain it. (love timber, uh oh, am I a Druid?) Creationists: nicely some solutions have already coated what i became going to say "Heads exploding" "making a song lalalalalala" and positively their fall guy devil!! some, in all likelihood are questioning (gasp) and revamping their outlook. keep in techniques in basic terms 'God' can make a tree. ;-D I had a co worker who with the exception of turning out to be completely speechless even as a fellow co worker reported he became an Atheist, later moaned that it wasn't trustworthy that many timber had longer lives than people. I advised him timber make contributions a ways more desirable than people do to the nicely-being of the planet. flow timber!! Creationists were 'placed the following' for the leisure of something else human beings. (exploding heads and all) over a million/2 million years in the past. (surely in simple terms decrease them open and count number their earrings!)

Quite frankly its out of fear. What you are describeing sounds like a creationist, in almost every case a creationist is a christian. I believe that many christians believe things like this and try to spread it because of their fear of hell. To them hell is such a scary place that no one being should ever be forced to go there, including of their own free will. That means they will do anything to stay as close to what they believe is God's will and word. They have taken the bible's note that the day was created in 6 days and taken that as litteral truth because they are scared to even consider questioning the validity of it. Also because they are so scared to question it, that they will not accept any scientific proof because its not in the bible. They will go out of their way to teach anyone and everyone about what is real to them, the words in the bible taken literally, that they'll teach it to young children, starting a whole new generation with the same deep fear.

They are doing what they think is best for themselves and, probably more for this reason, the best for others. They don't want anyone to go to hell, so they are trying to save as many people from that fate as possible. While this is an admirable cause, its also probably not the ultimate best for everyone. Most christians will admit that taking the bible litterally is either impossible, or very impractical. What ends up being best for all is to take the bible symbolically, or as a guide. Of course to those that are already fearful of the litteral version, there is very little to pull them out of this hole in the ground philosophy that they hold, because to them its risking their eternal soul/life.

Hopefully one day this sort of fear will be eliminated, because I don't see God as being that sort of being.

People who live with a christian world view believe the Bible and therefore the 6000 year thing. Are you aware of the carbon dating flaws-have you ever thought about questioning it? Who accepts what line of thinking?

There are many people who think the world is only 6,000 years old because if you trace things back to Adam, that is when he lived. Therefore, if you believe Adam was the first man God created, the would would only be 6,000 years old. HOWEVER, we have to remember (if you are a believer) that God's time is very different; 1 year can be a million years to him, etc.

It's just relegion and people will believe what is in the bible, not what is science. Even though I believe in God, I think that the world is like 4 billion years old

Because other people can tell good stories! People sometimes only believe what they are told. If a fanatic spins a yarn, the followers (like sheep) are easily led.

This is a hypothesis of the creation story in the Hebrew Tanakh. While I'll agree that it is a very weak hypothesis, it has its advocates, and they are perfectly free to try to convince others to agree, just as much as mainstream scientists are free to advance theirs.
