Living in Britain, I've visited quite a few castles and have been swept away into the past by them all. Some are ruins; you have to imagine the horseman crossing the drawbridge over the moat, riding under the portcullis and into the courtyard. You can sometimes feel the danger of the days as you stand under the thick walls and peer out of the narrow windows. In the great hall, if there are not very many people about, you can imagine the lord and lady feasting at the high table while serving men and wenches scurry with platters; the musicians play in the minstrels' gallery, and a fire rages in either the huge hearth or in the centre of the hall. Go into the bedrooms - if there are any, as the further you go back in time, the less privacy there was - and see the tiny closet for personal ablutions, which opens straight into the moat. The kitchens are sometimes preserved, where you can imagine the bustle of preparations. On the battlements and in the towers with their spiral stairs, imagine the knights and men-at-arms fighting in defence of their fortress. And in the dungeons, spare a moment to remember the poor souls who were perhaps tortured, or who were thrown into an oubliette to be forgotten... There are always ghosts, even if they are only in your mind. Though it is said you can still hear the screams of King Edward II in Berkeley Castle, where he was murdered most horribly.
Some castles are towering ruins; some are well-preserved and still lived in. Warwick, inside, is richly furnished; Haddon Hall has a wonderful gallery panelled in silver oak, and you can wonder whose richly-embroidered train swept the floor as she walked...

France has the Loire Valley full of chateaux and castles; I loved Chenonceaux and Chinon. In the Massif Central and the south, there are the precariously-perched Cathar strongholds, and the walled town of Carcassonne:

Here is a site on European castles; I can't put in everything, like those of Germany, Italy and Eastern Europe, but this is a start! -

Hope you will visit one day. It is quite something to go back in time under those solid walls that were built to protect and defend, and wonder who lived there and how they lived their lives.

Its my dream to visit Europe and some old castles someday. My husband, when he was in the army, went all over Europe and saw many castles. He said they just take your breath away, like stepping back in time. He has such wonderful stories about his travels.

you sound fantastically superior on your age and that i'm happy you do not opt to verify those twilight harry potter etc in my opinion, i imagine you should objective some historic novels. they don't look to be extremely fiction as they are about actual people. the president's female is one. i imagine Irving Stone is the author. the soreness and the ecstasy about Michaelangelo, the only about Rodin the artist, they are historic novels. you look superior adequate. they are relaxing reads and also you could study extremely a lot about distinct diverse issues some elements of the historic novels are made up, like conversations between the substantial characters. verify it out

I love them, and it's my fondest dream to one day get to actually stay and explore Europe and visit as many of them as possible. I haven't been able to yet -- but that's the top of my "to do before I die" list.
