British military presence in the Middle East was the result of the defeat and occupation of the Turkish Empire in WWI. Under the British mandate, the remains of the old Ottoman empire were carved up into fragments that were supposed to become stable states. Unfortunately, the British did all their map-revisions in ignorance of the cultural and demographic situation, drawing arbitrary national borders without regard to ethnic and religious differences.
In effect, Britain "created" Iraq and Afghanistan, throwing together ethnic groups that had been at each other's throats for centuries, and expecting them to drop all their feuds just like that and become nations on the European model. Obviously that has not worked.
T. E. Lawrence (of Arabia) worked to unite the desert tribes of the Arabian Peninsula in revolt against the Turks as part of the Allied war effort (again WWI)
