If money is no object and you want something unusual, try a Steinberger. They're made of graphite and have no head, just a neck and a small rectangular body. (The ball on the strings go where the head is missing, and the tuning end is on the body.) There are other unusual looking guitars with very small bodies, though how much they are, I don't know.

Otherwise, you might consider a Fender Telecaster or a clone. They're thin-bodied and lighter than some guitars (though I've seen heavy ones of this sort). With time and exercise, the weight of the guitar won't be an issue. What _will_ be an issue is the width of the neck and height of the strings.

If your hands are small, a narrow neck would serve you better. Look at a Fender Jazz bass, the necks are about 80% of the width of standard Fender bass neck. Since most of what any guitarist plays is rhythm and chords, comfort and clarity should be your priorities.

If you don't have strong fingers because of your size, you will want a neck with a low bridge and low frets. (The bridge is the bar that separates the fretboard from the head.) If it takes a lot of effort to hold the strings and get a clean C chord (especially with your ring and pinky fingers) then the bridge is too high.

Failing all that, try an open tuning and learn to play slide guitar (glass, NOT metal). Outside of the blues or Hawai'ian music, it's not widely used, and it might give you a unique sound. Joni Mitchell often plays with unusual tunings (many are open tunings).

If you want a REAL female guitar hero to listen to, try Poison Ivy of The Cramps. She's arguably the greatest rockabilly guitarist period, never mind gender, and is a great guitarist for any genre of music. Also, listen to Vicki Peterson of The Bangles. Yes, The Bangles weren't that great, but Peterson could play; listen to "All Over The Place", it's heavy on powerchords despite the production.

With either acoustic or electric, the strings are usually steel. The nylon ones produce better sound, but they hurt the fingers and only professionals should use them.

In terms of getting an electric guitar, well, there are a lot of 25 1/2" scale guitars that have the full-size neck.

There are also mini acoustic guitars with the full sized neck. If you buy a cheap one they are usually lightweight anyway.

get the size that is most comfortable for you. I would suggest an adult guitar....only because you want the quality that goes with it. and the type of strings really depends on what type of guitar you're going to play. Classical=catgut, acoustic=metal. I personally like the super light strings (they're easier on the fingers). Good luck! playing is the best stress reliever out there.

walk into a guitar store pick up a normal guitar, mess with it, see if you can touch the tuning pegs, if you feel confortable with normal, get it , but if you don't, go smaller, the one sucky thing about smaller guitars, is you have a small group to pick from, and if you ever want to get a higher quality guitar, good luck, almost all small guitars are beginner guitars
