Sounds like the flashing on the roof has either worked loose from the brick on the chimney or the cement mortar between the brick has deteriorated. I don't know what kind of roof material you have but if you have shingles you will be able to peel away portions to see if there is aluminum plates against the chimney stack and if there is evidence of wet areas below. You can either get roof tar and reset the aluminum flashing after the area is dried or get a roofer to handle this problem.

as you know you have a leak. go outside and try to see if there are any broken tiles on the roof in that area or in the greater suroundings. if you can't see anything have a professional ( roofer) come. i think he has to come anyways. there night be also something wrong with your chimney. do you know how old your roof is? the average lifetime is @25 years if i'm not mistaking. and you don't want to wait to long to have it fixed. the damage will get bigger and so the fixing cost.

That sounds like you need to check the flashing on the roof around your fireplace. Make sure it is well tarred or caulked, and there are no places for water to enter. You should also have a rainguard over the chimney.
