I just got a new oak computer desk a few weeks back. I was cleaning the desk area the other day, and moved my tiny computer speakers. To my dismay, the rubber stoppers attached on the bottom of the speakers (to help protect against scratching), the rubber dots left black dot stains on my new desk! There are 4 rubber dots on the bottom of each speaker, and now my desk has two small areas with black dot stains.
I've tried using a furniture spray polish to see if it will lift, but no luck.
I've seen stuff on the internet for repair small wood areas, called wood pens that you get as the color of the wood. Is this a good method or any suggestions?? Please help... I am not much of a craftswoman, and do not want a method to difficult or where I will potentially mess up the desk. I do not want to strip the desk.
Please help..thanks.

This is an easy fix! Use plain white toothpaste on a dry rag and rub. Remove toothpaste with damp towel. Be sure you use only white toothpaste. Gels will not do the trick. This also works on water spots. Good Luck

I would try furniture polish/cleaner and try to gently scrape them off, or maybe try using a little Goo Gone (called something like that). Best I could come up with. Sounds like a little bit of the rubber itself is stuck. If you can't and it scratches, use some Old English Furniture polish. It works great to cover scratches, dings etc. Just match it to the color wood you have and rub in into the damaged area. Hope some of this helps.

I assume the desk has been varnished or lacquered.
I f it has then are you sure that these black rings are stains, could they be small rings of actual rubber.
If they are then use something like White spirit on a cloth start rubbing in small circles getting bigger as you work outwards past the ring, this way the cleaning is not all concentrated in one place.
You could also try CIF cleaning cream in the same manner, both these should take the rings off. Once the rings are off then polish over with a furniture polish.
Best of luck

My guess is that the black dots are stains. In other words putting spray polish over them now is just protecting them. The grease pens you describe are to patch area's that have lost their finish.
this is now what you describe happening. The black rubber marks should lift off with a good wood cleaner. Murphy's oil soap is one type of wood cleaner. A stronger cleaner is Goof Off

The pens you refer to will only help if it's scratched or gouged. If the black spots are just a bit of rubber you should be able to carefully scratch it off. Try it gently with your fingernail and see if that works.

The toothpaste idea works but be careful not to rub to hard. I know this sounds crazy but I use mayo. It takes some rubbing but it also works on water spots and permanent pen.

Put a little rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball and clean it up---or a small amount of lighter fluid.
