Once in a while the car wont turn over, but if I give it a nudge from behind, it'll start.

it sounds like a vaccum turning on, it's that kind of whirring.
I suspect the starter is going bad, but then why would it make any noise at all, if it were faulty?

it could be a faulty fuel pump..usually the first thing you hear when you turn your engine is the fuel pump priming.

check it out.

The starter motor works by engaging the teeth on the flywheel and turning the engine over.
Sounds like you may have a bad tooth on the flywheel (usually caused by "double-starting" the engine-turning the key to 'start' after the engine is already running). When the bad or broken tooth on the flywheel is aligned with where the starter is-all you hear is the starter motor running freely (not contacting the flywheel). Not a pretty sound.
By nudging the car, you are turning the flywheel just enough to move it past the bad spot in the flywheel so the starter gear can mesh with it again.
The only way to deal with it is to either keep doing what you're doing or replace the flywheel/flex plate/ring gear.

Probably your starter is "motoring" without sending the starter pinion gear into the flywheel ring gear. It's just spinning like a motor, doing 1/2 of what it should do (spin AND throw the gear) . Not sure what type of starter you have but you'll have to pull it and see what's what in there. Could be a bad solenoid if you have that type of starter.

It's the flywheel or flex plate most likely. The whirring noise you're hearing is the starter spinning without engaging the flywheel.

It damn sure ain't the fuel pump!

Bendix Spring. %one hundred certain. it ought to no longer be something else... out of your sparkling description of this No commence situation. Push commence the automobile (If its customary drop the snatch in second equipment even as its rolling ahead with the most contained in the on position) to get it to the mechanic and tell him it needs a Bendix spring. Or do away with the starter and take it to a Rebuild keep (It wont be expensive) Or fix it (The aspects will value round ten to 20 greenbacks) in case you opt for to fix it right that's a head commence... purchase a clean bendix spring... Its the Spring that rams the force equipment onto the flywheel even as the starter solenoid engages. The wirring noise that you're listening to is a operating starter loose wheeling. (Its no longer enticing its force equipment) do away with the starter and do away with the screws on the housing from starter (the part with the equipment on it.) The bendix spring pulls acceptable out and is extremely common to interchange.
