Hey Mady,

If you have an animal shelter (dog pound) near you, they always need people to walk dogs, feed them, clean out the pens, etc. You have to do it on a volunteer basis (translation: you won't make any money), and since you're so young, a parent will definitely have to sign a waiver for you, and probably have to be there with you, if they'll even let you at all. A shelter or vet may let you hang out and observe on a Saturday morning or something like that, but you'll have to stay out of the way and just watch. If you get to do that, bring a pen & paper with you every time, so you can write down questions about things you don't understand, and maybe later, you can ask them. I volunteered at a shelter when I was young, and I loved it, but be prepared to see some things you may not like or understand. Maybe ask your parents what are some of the bad things you might see. Maybe you should start with taking care of neighborhood pets. I hope it works out for you!

You can't, I think you do have to be 16. Sorry! Unless you have an immediate family member that works there. You can't legally get a job until you're 13 or 14, so you can't get your working papers until then. If you're only 10, they probably wouldn't let you do too much anyway. You'd just clean cages and stuff. However, if you have an immediate family member that works there, then you can work there as a "family duty" type thing.

Only a couple years left! Just find some other stuff to do in the meantime. If you really like animals, try making up some fliers or posters advertising that you'll walk dogs, or petsit for families when they go on vacation, or offer a "pet-wash" (plus you could also charge a couple bucks for it and make a little side money to put away for college or a car or something). There's a million ways to work with animals, and it would probably be better. If you worked at a vet's office, you'd probably end up seeing a lot of sick or dying/dead animals and that would be so sad. I know I personally can't stand to see an animal in pain, so dogwalking or petsitting would be a better option for me personally. See what interests you most. Good luck!

If you want to help animals, why don't you see if your community allows you to volunteer? Most communities have animal shelters that need people to hang out with the animals (petting, playing, etc..). You might be too young to go alone but maybe you could get a family member to join you.

Ask them if you can sweep up, or help bathe the animals. I know if I saw an energentic 10 year old coming to me for a chance to help, I would be impressed!

Also try to talk to neighbors about walking thier dogs, and\or giving them baths. You are a youngster. Show them how mature, and determined you are!

Gosh that is really neat of you. I wish you could entertain my chocolate lab. He is so hyperactive. He loves to play with kids.
I bet if you offered to be a volunteer, the vet would let you. Offer yourself up and see what happens.
