A word that need a very deep understanding. One word of reference is "shoonya" , acclaimed to be best ever contribution to scientific world in its history, and that it came from India (hence the Indian form of the word), closest meaning available is 'Zero' , which is to be understood beyond mere reference to the mathematical numeral meaning that it denotes !
A whole science of meditation has evolved to reach this nothing consciously !
I don't know whether it is appropriate to co-relate , but am tempted to quote a very similar question in the 'source' below for the more inquisitive readers !

Yes there is such a thing as nothing, but it means not a thing about something.

Nothing is a state of being; in a sense, it is a state of not being, ceasing to exist. Nothing is the lack or absence of anything (including empty space). Colloquially, however, the term is often used to describe a particularly unimpressive person, event, or object.
The term "nothing" is rarely used mathematically, though it could be said that a set contains "nothing" if and only if it is the empty set, in which case its cardinality (or size) is zero.

Such question is null and void.... (sorry - couldn't resist...)
Total absence of matter, ie. vacuume is possible.... then it is 'an empty space' which _space_ is an area which is something.
You first have to define what you are referring to when you say 'thing.' Is it a matter of some sort, or does space and energy count? Then absence of matter that meets your definition of 'thing' is 'nothing.'

For every action there is a reaction. It is the opposing force for something. Still an existence!
This is a word that is being used for comfort to avoid reality. What is reality? A thing, just as is nothing.

Nothing is the absence of things. Just as there is no cold, just the absence of heat. And there isn't darkness, there is only the absence of light. Nothingness is incomprehensible to the human mind.

The minute you figure out what nothing is everything will make sense to you, as is nothing makes sense to you and everything is a mystery. Think on it.

try reading the "theory of nothingness"
nutshell: the finite universe is expanding into a infinite void (of nothing).. and to be more specific, "nothing" is there as-in no matter exists there, but the idea "nothing" is surely something...
