The fact that it's not slavery which upsets today's black population so much.
Its the 100 years of institutionalized discrimination (jim crow) that was imposed on our people that may have some of us still upset.
Blacks didn't get full civil rights in America until the 1960's.
So it wasn't "200" years ago, or whatever.
(some) white people will go on and on about "oh that was hundreds of years ago 'get over it'" but never stop to think that if it wasn't for their race's discrimination and bigotry we may have come alot further along as a people than we have.

"and thats the truth Ruth"☺

I'm sure if it were as easy as just "moving to the suburbs" people would

I understand what you are saying, but there are plenty of sucessful black people in this country, There are congress men and women, and senators, Dr.s, Lawyers, Business men and women. The reason you didn't have full civil rights until the 1960's is because nobody faught really hard for them until then. But if Rosa Parks (for example) never refused to move, When do you think the bus ban would have started? Maybe not for 5-10 years, because nobody ever refused to move until she did it. Put some serious thought into it, if it wasn't for the people who started the civil right movement when they did when would it of happened? Why didn't people do it sooner? You can blame the supression of your race on white people, but why didn't anything happen sooner?

I didn't live in that time, I don't know what it was like. I live in todays world and teach my children that all people are equal and they should treat everybody the same way they want to be treated. I don't discriminate against black people I never have the only ones I ever had a problem with are the ones that think I owe them something, because of something that happed "hundreds of years ago". Sorry that was before my time, nobody can change what happened, what we can do today is learn to work together, so someday there can be peace.

Many Blacks remain poor and uneducated because in our society there is no emphasis on individual responsibility. Many poor minority and white parents do not put emphasis on education or success and their children end up on welfare.

You may cry racism, but if parents would make their children stay in school, go to college, encourage abstinence until children can be supported, and always be there for their children, they might end the cycle of poverty.

If you live in a place where there are drivebys and gangs, move and rent a place in the suburbs. It doesn't take much for a kid to join a gang or rob a liquor store, but it takes real effort and constructive leaders to help minorities end cycles of poverty.

Don't blame me for people of my race's mistakes. I can do nothing for you now, and you ranting about things that likely didn't happen to you solves nothing. I am sorry for the past, but there is nowhere to go but forward.

Very few people alive today had a hand in slavery.

But I agree institutional bias and bigotry are still rampant. Choosing to remain a victim to this has had as big a hand in the results created (or not) in the great American melting pot. What should be done to "cure" this wrong that would actually produce the "expected" or desired change.

I don't think restitution is an answer.

500000 americans died to begin the work of eliminating slavery.. and thuosands more, who were not black, have worked thier life toward finishing the job.. If you are angry , look closer at your own heart, not the people who loved you so much that they carried you thus far, and get up and do something yourself. Man, how much do you think we have to do. I suppose Dr. Rice, Gen. Powel, J.C. Watts, Shaq, (and hundreds more) who worked hard and consistently are not black. or is that eggplants. Your cheap excuses and thinly vieled racism make me sick. If you cannot make it in america man you cannot make it anywhere..

I don't practice racism against anyone. At the end of the day, I am who I am responsible for, not for anything or anyone that came before me. Likewise, I can't hold people responsible for anything that happened to me if they weren't involved.

and that's the truth for everyone Ruth.
