My son is 9 1/2 mo. We are finishing up the 2nd foods that we have so we can move on to 3rd foods? Do we have to do 3rd foods or can we just go straight to table foods or gerber graduates?

You don't *have to* ever offer jarred so-called "baby foods" at all. If your baby is ready for solids, you can give *food* instead from the very beginning!! Signs of readiness for solids include the appearance of teeth, the ability to sit unsupported, and the development of the "pincer grasp" where a baby picks up small objects between the thumb and *one* finger. If baby has at least the last 2 of these, then he may be ready for solids.

When my son started picking up small foods with his fingers he got mostly table food, like peas, diced cooked carrots, small pasta, etc. My son LOVES the Gerber fruit puffs. They are small and disolve in the baby's mouth. He liked the veggie puffs (Sweet potato) too. Anything soft and small and only a couple of pieces at a time is a good thing to start out with.

He is old enough to have table foods. I would wait until he was one for tomatoes or oranges because they're acidic. I used 1st and 2nd foods, but incorporated in table foods also. Let him try what you're eating as long it's mashed up so he won't choke. Also, keep the foods bland he doesn't need seasoning.

No you dont' have to use baby food. You will know if he is ready for table food. As long as he will eat the table food, go ahead and give it to him. I think they enjoy the taste of the table food a lot more then the jar food once they get it. And just think no more picking all them jars out of the baby food isle. Yea

my daughter will be 10 months old in a week, i have been giving her soft table foods for about a month and a half now. I started her off with those Gerber snacks that melt in her mouth((they're the shape of "snowflakes")), to help her with feeding herself. they come in all flavors and are easily chewed. Once your baby gets the hang of eating with his jaws he should be able to eat small snacks ((shredded cheese, mashed potatoes, mashed mac&cheese, small crackers, peas, cut up bananas, etc.)). but even though he will be eating table foods, you should still feed him stage 3, or stage 2, foods just to make sure he gets enough.

If your child can feed himself, skip the jar food. You can just as easily fix him something to eat out of what your having as long as it is in small enough portions. My 8 month old skipped stage 2 all together and went to table food. She can eat diced up fruits, and I give her small portions of the canned vegetables that we eat for dinner, she has even had spaghetti. They love it. Have fun exploring with what your baby likes.

Well, when I was taking care of my neice she was eating gerber graduates when she was around 8 months old, but yet again she was eating cereal when she was 3 months.

I didn't do baby foods with my second and third.
Can he pick up food on his own?
Try chunks of banana or pear. My ped said if you can squish it easily between your thumb and forefinger then even a baby without teeth can handle it. Plus, they have such great gag reflexes at this age.
Piece of advice *DO NOT* give the kid meat sticks-ewwwww-so gross when barfed up.
