They've got talent, they just don't get angry after an 18-0 loss! The kids chasing the foul balls show more desire than some of the players. When I'm on the mound, I'm starting to feel like a junk ball-has been. I want some of these younger guys to take over this team but they just don't seem to understand how fortunate they are to have the opportunity to play, or how much this amatuer baseball team means to this small farming community of 800. Please help with some words of wisdom. Any success stories from other small town clubs that turned things around and became a productive/competitive squad? Am I just hoping for something that just isn't there? Even more interesting... with our one win season, we're still pulling in three times as many fans as our competitors and making about a $1,000 in concessions a game. Sincerely, 109stitches.

P.S. - If your a former major leaguer & would like to experience a fun small town baseball atmoshphere, we'll plan a day around your visit.

Make them run...Every earned run they give up after say 5 runs should be a lap of poles...Make it a "Fun Run"...It will definitely piss them off, yet teach them two things: Do not throw the ball to first when the runner is already there and get the ball quickly in the infield...The will be pissed and get quicker in a hurry!

Maybe all your team needs is to feel confident about their playing. Are you the captain or the coach? If you're the coach, read a Vince Lombardi book.
I know he's "football", but it applies here, too.
He used to tell his players at the beginning of the season :
"Gentlemen, This is a football."
He just got back to basics, trained them in the fundamentals of football and made winners out of them.
Also, lead by example. Do they see you ALWAYS being positive even when you want to bash their heads in with the bat?
Winning starts within. Are you a winner? Show them. Are you a leader? Show them. Do you show up for every practice? Do you give 150% till the end of the game no matter what the score is? Excitement is contagious!
Try it and you'll see. Good Luck ! : )

First of all, Baseball's a game, getting your teammates "Pi$$ed" probably won't help motivate them to play better.
In a lot of youth sports many of the participants really don't want to be there but play anyways due to peer/parent pressure. I'd try to find a couple allies on your team and work together to motivate the rest of the players who aren't playing up to their potential. Develop more teambuiliding activites, as you become a closer team everyone will try a little harder so they don't let their "brothers" down. Try watching some motivational movies together like Miracle, or the Rookie.
Remember though above all, Baseball's a game unless you're getting paid.... Have fun.

Do suicides...aka running from home plate to first, then back to home, about 20 times straight.

Last 3 do 20 more.

Our coach made us carry our bags while jogging a mile.
