If you do a short search on google you'll see the name Ron Wyatt. He was a physician that was a treasure hunter who happened upon the ark during a dig. Because of it's location and the fact that the Israeli govt. sealed off the area the find remains a closely guarded mystery/secret.
If his claims are true, which they sound fairly believable, then it is located under the traditional site where Christ was crucified.
Even more interesting is that the recently renewed Sanhedrin has been planning on building a new temple. They have been raising sacrificial animals and preparing the materials for a new construction to take place. The ark would be crucial for such an undertaking.

i think sirl may be correct. i saw a video which showed the building in ethiopia where the ark was said to be located, and the vibe coming from the building was very powerful. and this was seeing just the building from outside. so, there was definitely something remarkable inside. although what it was exactly can't be stated with certainty. no one from the film crew was allowed inside.
