The obvious reply is "the best sort" - and such a reply will *not* be chosen as best answer here. I want to know what, for you, makes an answer the best answer.

well i look at the answer that is the most thought out by the answerer..and try to avoid people who just copy & pastes unless its the only answer directlty related to the question..so pretty much who ever put the most thought into it and put in the most amount of key time

The type of answer I choose as a best answer varies greatly. If the question is an opinion question, I will vote for the response I like the best. If the question ask for specific information, I will usually vote for the response with the most valuable information and sources. The longest answer is not always the best answer, but in some cases the longest answer is the best because it provides sources and strong supporting evidence.

While a question is in voting, I have made it a habit to vote my answer as the best answer. If their is only one answer and it sucks, I will still vote it as best answer because I like points. Sometimes a question will get only a few similar responses and I just randomly pick one because they are all almost the same.

In this world. There are two differnent answers.

One - straight forward, to the point, no confusion

Two - "I dunno" --which is an ALL TIME BAD--

Depending on the question asked, you have a choice between answers but you never want to answer with "I don't know". The best answer to any question is one that is totally unbaised and leaves the person asking the question with an answer, but unsatisfied.

A lame example but this will show my point.

1.
"You want some McDonald's?"
"If you're up for it" - Good response
shows absolutely nothing. they don't know if you really want it or not. this only works if you don't care what you're eating but you still want to sound firm and not wish-washy.

2.
"You want some McDonald's?"
"Yeah I really crave some, let's do that" (or no)
- bad responses. what if they don't want/do want McDonald's? they were just asking.

3.
"You want some Mcdonald's?"
"I don't care"- don't do this. this shows people that you don't have confidence in yourself. Yes a simple yes or no question, but it tells a lot in a person.

Answering questions is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT in life. A simple question and response like the one proposed above gives away your ENTIRE mindset and attitude.

I like to choose answers that really address what I asked in my questions. Too many times people will just type out something that is not even close to what I asked, or they just didn't take the time to read what I wrote. So I like to choose an answer that is well-thought out, addresses my question(s), and also uses good grammar! I get headaches trying to read and understand eighty percent of the crap people write on here!

For most people it seems to be whatever answer shares their personal opinion. No matter how poorly thought out the opinion is.

In my experience, I try to pick the answer that's the most help and well supported. As long as someone answers the question fully, and doesn't call me an idiot while doing it, I'll award them best answer.

One that answers my question thoroughly or if its a question that many people answer right, I pick the first person who answered.
If its an advice question someone who speaks eloquently and intellegently. If the advice is something I would not have thought of in the first place.

A best answer is the answer that gives the best answer to the question. So when I read the question and then the best answer I no longer have a question.

Well i think that this place should be more like a chat between people discussing topics that a kind of school where people try to pass their culture or their knowledge...I would rather get to know people than having the correct answer to what is the meaning of life...
i like answers where i can see a person behind it not the answers that seem to be written by a computer

I place importance on 'witty' and 'creative'. I see too many of the standard vanilla answers over and over. Too many peeps have no sense of humor...
Why do people put an answer that has already been givin? I think this is extra-lame

I generally choose the one I think makes the most sense. That obviously isn't necessarily the most popular. It seems like a lot of people like to choose the one they think is funniest.

I look for the ones that answer my question seriously. I don't choose the ones that are stupid, sarcastic, or tell me what I want to hear. Depth is good.
