BOTH! If you stretch and run a little bit before doing any kind of sports, it will help you stay motivated and make you feel more "in shape". But always make sure your stretch a little bit afterwards too. If you do a lot of vigorous activity and then go sit down, you're going to get cramps. And they hurt, believe me. Depending how much you do, you'll be so sore in the morning.

Best thing to do is stretch your legs, they cramp easiest. Look up some diagrams on the web if you want. Like for stretching your hamstrings, calves, stomache/waist, ankles, neck, etc. You can take a little jog if you want to get your adrenaline pumping. About 10 or 15 minutes should do. Or until you feel like you're ready to play and don't feel tired or lazy. And then afterwards, make sure you "cool down" (at least 10 or 15 minutes, but more is fine), a little walking or jogging lightly should work fine. When you stop sweating and feel more relaxed, you can sit on the grass and do the same types of stretches as before to relieve muscle tension and prevent soreness in the morning.

You should stretch before and after practice. You should be doing enough running during practice, but if you feel like you've still got a ton of energy do a mile after practice. And trust me, you'd need no more exercise. If you don't want to run a mile, do 50 bleacher sets.

Always stretch before and after. Before prevent injuries during, after prevents soreness later. I tend to think that running prepractice is better because then you have motivation to push yourself past your comfortable workout (playing/practicing is more fun than just running for me)

So, I stretch for 10 minutes, run around (drills that are more running/dribbling also work here), then work on other skills/plays. Always scrimmage last. Then stretch out afterwards. Well, actually I often skip stretching afterwards because I am tired and dont really get sore anymore, but you should technically do it.

I play both. Simply because Volleyball is after school and soccer is night. Soccer games are weekends, and Volleyball are week days. It honestly is on personal preference. Soccer games tend to last longer and allow more people on the field. Gives you more playing time and fun. Also alot of mobility. If you are lazy, volleyball is better. Since you don't have to run around all day.

Most of the previous answers are wrong. You should jog slowly for awhile until your muscles are slightly warm. You don't want to stretch first, which is contrary to some beliefs but you can tear cold muscles very easily.

After. Your muscles are warm and pliable. I have never stretched before my training and, knock on wood, haven't had any major injuries due to overuse or things like that.

"Joe W" is correct:
you need to slowly warm up ---> stretching ---> game ---> cool down ---> stretching

The reason is very simple: a cold muscle is subjected to injury if not properly stretched.
You can do a simple experiment to understand that: nightime put a rubber band inside the refrigerator. In the mornig remove it and try to stretch it: most likely it will brake. That is your muscle when it is not warmed up properly.

before your practice you should stretch so your muscles aren't tight & you should also stretch afterword so you don'y get cramps so then you can play the next day if you want to.
