my family from both sides came to the us after 1900, so we didn't have any part in the actual slave trades in the states. do i think that black people today deserve reparations? sure, if they were actually enslaved we should give them a huge settlement. to all those that think some distant relative may have been a slave and are looking for a handout, i say get a job. and for all you haters, i'm half black, so keep it to yourselves.

First, there is not a single former slave alive today. If there were they would certainly be due just compensation for their labor, but the ancestors of atrocities do not deserve compensation in any way. As a precedent for this point of view, from the last century, let us look at how the compensation of slave labor during the holocaust of World War II has been handled. The thousands of people that survived that inequity are being compensated by both the government of Germany and by the companies that gained from their forced labor, and rightfully so. But their children have no inherited right to collect for the uncompensated labor of their parents. Certainly the grandchildren and great grandchildren of American slaves never experienced the appalling life of slavery, and therefore, like the children of Jews and others enslaved in Germany 50 years ago, they have no claim for themselves.
Secondly, blacks do not have a monopoly on living in poverty in this country. According to the latest census data approximately 30 percent of blacks and whites live in poverty. Hispanics unfortunately have an even higher percentage living below the poverty line. All this current day poverty can not be attributed to a disgusting institution that was ended 150 years ago. It can however be attributed to present day governmental policy. There should be a monumental effort made by the government, at all levels, to get all Americans out of poverty, but a policy centered on only one race is just as wrong as slavery was.
Thirdly, slavery could not have existed without the complicity of black Africans who supplied most of the unfortunate humans that were sold into this dreadful condition. It was not just whites that kept this retched institution going for over 200 years. In addition, there were over 200,000 white Americans that paid the ultimate retribution during the Civil War, when they gave their lives to end slavery. The reparation debt owed to slaves was paid a long time ago when the North won the Civil War and freed them.

Slave reparations? Who said anything about slave reparations? And you are 100% correct about a check not solving any of the problems of today.
I would much rather have people like yourself take the time to study what the slave trade has done to black Americans down through the ages. For instance, do you literally feel hurt when you see images of blacks hung by the neck because of mob violence? Well I do, and I've never seen a real-life lynching. Do you hurt when you see and hear cases of police brutality originating from racial profiling? Do you feel hurt when some callous soul reaches back to something like "slave reparations" to justify a base, racist belief that the ancient slave trade is not worth some kind of apologetic gesture?
Of course you don't. Because your ancestors came here in 1913, when "the party was over." But it wasn't over for my great, great grandmother who was Creek indian and her daughter who was half-black.
FYI, I would not take a "slave reparation" check even if such a creature existed. And one of the reasons I wouldn't take it is because people like you would scream bloody murder. But the most important reason is because such a check would totally dismiss the fact that my ancestors (both Indian and African) were denied their humanity by people like you.

Have there not been enough reparations already? Sorry my family history includes:
American Indian (don't see me getting land from the white man),
Irish ( you don't see me getting reparations for being treated like **** and might as well have been a slave),
German (see Irish)
etc...
I also agree those who do want the reparations checks and are so "offended" by pictures of hangings, brutality, etc are thin skinned and should be shot for the common good after all they certainly aren't the fittest we need to survive. Slavery is over and you need to get past what has happened. As long as you keep blaming somebody else for your problems you will always have them.

You have got a great sense of humor and a good point. I don't understand how anyone can make money off of something they were not subjected to.
Another question. Slavery was a hot button issue between the states since the time of Independence. Shouldn't only the states that had slaves be responsible to pay?

The issue of slave reparations is so onerous, it's hard not to get mad about it.
Of course, my ancestors wore gray uniforms and surrendered at Appomattox.
But here's the bottom line on this subject....600,000 Americans mostly all white(....that's right the 54th Mass. Regt. didn't win the Civil War by itself) gave their lives in the struggle to save our Union and to abolish slavery.
The debt has been paid...in blood. Let anyone who thinks they need to collect reparations for something that happened to their ancestors make the journey to Arlington and ask for the money there.
Shame on you who demand reparations.

Can I get a check if I can prove that my ancestors were sent to America as an indentured servant? I am not going to pay if I didn't own slaves nor did my great grand parents. This is 2006 let's drop it already.
