My 6 week old has developed a white tongue. This is my second child, and my first one had thrush, so I am almost certain this is what this is. But it's been awhile.(6years) I know I need to take him to his pediatrician and I am, but they can't see him til tomorrow afternoon. What I was wondering, have any of you fellow mommies picked up any hints to make him a little more comfortable until he gets to see the Doc? Other than the thrush, he's 100% healthy, if that helps any. Thanks in advance!

Oh, and he's bottle-fed. So no need to warn me about sharing the infection by breastfeeding.

There isn't much you can do for an infant to help him, since most of the helpful things would require an older child.

The list of treatments mentioned in various sources for Oral thrush includes the following list. Always seek professional medical advice about any treatment or change in treatment plans.
Watchful waiting - some cases are mild and self-limiting and may require no treatment; check with your doctor.
Natural yogurt - to rebalance levels of "good" bacteria.
Acidophilus - to increase "good" bacterial levels.
Warm salt-water mouth rinses - mainly to ease discomfort.
Antifungal treatments
Treatment of any underlying condition
Treatment of breast-feeding mother - because both mother and infant may have it; treating both avoids re-contagion.

I can't think of anything right off hand that you can use to alleviate his discomfort. However, if I may give you a hint about how to prevent this once you get the medication he needs. This is milk scum and some babies can not get rid of this after they feed. If after he has a bottle, offer him some water from another bottle this will clean his mouth and help prevent a recurrence. It doesn't sound as if the thrush is too bad right now but I know how you feel...........they are so little and helpless you just don't want anything at all to be wrong with them. Your a good parent.

A large white area on the middle of the tongue from the front to near the back is usually a milk stain. If there are raised white dots, it is thrush. It can be difficult because sometimes the milk stain hides the dots, but look carefully to see if there are dots *on* the stain or elsewhere in the mouth.

As for treatment, you can use gentian violet. It is available over the counter in many places (including the US). For instructions on use, see sources section below. This is an article written by a doctor who is an expert in breastfeeding.

In addition, be sure to sterilize the bottles and nipples every day, and replace them every week until the thrush is gone. This goes for pacifiers, too, and anything else that goes in baby's mouth.

I don't have any advice that hasn't been offered, but I do sympathize! My grandson got thrush at 6 weeks too, and what a nightmare! He was so uncomfortable. :0(

Try putting baby oragel in his mouth, the numbing effect will help. just be sure to follow recommended dose on the label. Thrush is really a yeast infection in the mouth. Try wiping babies mouth out after feedings, Have mom wash her breast also after each feeding and allow breast to air dry. If you bottle feed be sure to wash nipples well and to also dry properly. This will help prevent future episodes! Best Wishes!
