I'm trying to make my old internal hard drive an external one by putting it in an enclosure. which side are they measuring. my drive measures 4 in x 5.75 in and .75 thick. so which size enclosure will work for mine? It is Maxtor model 34098h4 if anyone know what that means.

These are the approximate widths of the outside mounts of the drive:

2.5 inch for laptop drives

3.5 for desktop drives

5.25 is actually a floppy disk size...

You are refering to a desktop 3.5 inch drive.

The size usually refers to the diameter of the media. If your drive is 4" wide, then you probably need a 3.5" enclosure.

2.5" , 3.5" & 5.25" usually refer to the size of the media (the metal disk ) in ur hard drive ....looks like ur using a 3.5" one based on ur dimensions

They refers to the diameter of the disks itself, which gives you roughky the width of the HDD.
