The term "your better half" is usually used to refer to your spouse.

Originally this expression is supposed to have meant "a close friend or lover," and by the 16th century it referred to either a wife or lover. Philip Sidney used it in this way, in 'Arcadia': "My dear, my better half (said he), I find I must now leave thee." Today it tends to be used lightly for either husband or wife.

It is a saying used to be flattering to your "significant other" ( in my case my husband). Two "halfs" equal a whole. By saying "You are my better half", means you are complimenting them. Others who feel it is a joke are not in the right relationship for them...sorry, but true...

As per my knowledge, "Better half" is used for the "life partner". So the sentence may simply mean, "you are my spouce".
