I think they are in denial. They really don't believe that anything bad can happen to them.

Old habits die hard, usually with the person.
Now, if you think I'm talking just cigarettes or booze, there is also Fast food, especially red meat burgers and greasey fries. There is also Veganism, which denies you many amino acids and protiens required to keep the body together, unless you're willing to spend $40 an ounce on some exotic mushroom that is imported from Denmak and only sold by some place in Seattle!
How about driving fast. Those people who live to take the open road at 85 as a deer is crossing.
A habit is a habit.
It's something we get into, get lost within and most of the time it can be our down fall.
Like I said, old habits die hard, usually with the person.

They are identified with them. "I am a smoker" "I smoke: that's what I do. It's who I am" The mind that is anti the active mind: the false self that lives in pain paints a tapestry of lies that fool the person into thinking their life are so horrible that getting a buzz from any source, even one that is detrimental, is justified. "I have problem A, B, AND C, hey I deserve a drink" Ultimately the unconscious mind seeks destruction as final solution to the problems it is tasked to solve. However this destruction is not of the body or mind but rather the pain caused by not having the answers. However the unconscious mind is just that. not conscious. So it is virtually impossible to realize that killing the patient to cure a decease is not the best way of working.
Example: Emo Teen sniffs glue. Why? Emo teen's unconscious mind says I have this problem, this problem and this problem making me emo. I can sniff clue, that'll stop the pain, and make all the pain stop, and maybe it'll kill the version of me that is in pain. the unconscious mind does not factor in killing the suffering mind, will also kill the whole system.
This then leads to addiction which is a living body of pain which parasites energy from the mind to sustain it's existence which ironically enough, is to end pain. The only way out of this is to accept what is, and see what the mind is doing: catching it in the act, and holding it responsible for pain. This disallows escape, and ultimately, correcting and healing

I dunno, and most of them constantly complain that they can't stop. ut in all reality, we probably all have at least one bad habit that is hazardous to our health that we do not or can not stop. I bite my nails and eat too much when I'm depressed for example, it's mind over matter and you have to have the willpower to make yourself stop.
